Researchers at the HUN-REN Agricultural Research Center (HUN-REN ATK) Agricultural Research Institute have developed a new drought-tolerant wheat line. Semi-dwarf wheat can reduce yield losses caused by water shortage even during the critical flowering stage, and thanks to its thicker root system and efficient water storage, it offers an outstanding opportunity for breeding climate-adapted, drought-tolerant wheat varieties – the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network announced to MTI on Friday.

According to the information, researchers at the HUN-REN Agricultural Research Center, Institute of Agriculture have developed the wheat line called GLA8 within the framework of extensive cooperation. They highlighted that the GLA8 line was created by crossing the Martonvásár Mv9kr1 and Mv Karizma wheat genotypes with Agropyron glael. In field and greenhouse experiments, the yield and fertility of the new wheat line showed values similar to those of the parent varieties. At the same time, flowering occurred earlier, which may be an advantage in drought periods – they explained.

A study about the research was published in Plant Cell Reports, one of the most prestigious journals in the field, which describes the creation and detailed examination of a new, stable 3St(3D) chromosome substitution, the so-called substitution, wheat line – GLA8 – – they wrote in the announcement.
