New regulations in Hungarian spas: safety and sustainability in the foreground
Two important decrees, 509/2023 (XI. 20) and 510/2023 (XI. 20), were published in last November’s edition of the Magyar Közlöny, which bring significant changes to the operation of Hungarian spas. The purpose of the changes is to protect the medicinal waters while ensuring the safety and comfort of bathers.
The new regulations set clear guidelines for the treatment of medicinal waters. In addition to limiting the mixability of medicinal waters, the concept of “medicinal water” was also introduced, which allows a certain amount of mixing, but only if the medicinal effect can still be proven. The disinfection of such waters is also regulated – reports Turizmus.com.
The decree also reformulates safety and water quality regulations. Proportionate requirements apply to both small and large bathing complexes, thus ensuring the health and safety of bathers. The regulations include new accident prevention standards, as well as the appropriate number and quality of changing rooms, showers and washrooms.
Based on the comments made by Dóra Gere, the NNGYK expert, the changes will be introduced gradually, thereby helping the transition of the existing baths. In most cases, the deadline for changes will be March 19, 2026. The new regulations also include marking the temperature, depth and number of bathers of the pools.
