New checkout concept at Aldi Süd in Germany
Cash registers with double slides will make shopping in Aldi Süd stores more efficient and pleasant in the future. The concept has recently been tested in 30 stores in Germany and self-service checkouts will also play a bigger role.
“Every store has different customer needs and expectations depending on its geographical location and structural conditions. It’s our job to understand these and offer solutions that benefit both our customers and our employees,” says André Giesen, Director of Store Operations at Aldi Süd.
All Aldi Süd stores will gradually be equipped with at least one extended checkout that can serve two customers at the same time. These cash desks are equipped with a double slide, two displays, two separate ED terminals and a receipt printer. While one customer is paying, the next purchase can be recorded, allowing more time for the goods purchased to be put away.
Self-service checkouts are being installed in some shops in towns to complement existing and new expanded checkouts.
“This will allow Aldi Süd customers to go to the checkout that is most convenient for them. In shops near schools or office buildings, for example, many small purchases are made. Self-service checkouts are an excellent way to reduce queues in front of the checkout,” says André Giesen.
The roll-out will start in the first quarter of 2023.
