New sustainability framework helps food supply chains
Six major food manufacturers – Bakkavor, The Billington Group, The Compleat Food Group, Greencore, Premier Foods and Samworth Brothers – have teamed up with the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) to develop a new guide called the Food Supply Chain Sustainability Framework, which will help manufacturers, brands and retailers work together to achieve sustainability goals.
The framework aims to create a consistent, transparent basis for assessing and communicating sustainability priorities across the supply chain. The new self-assessment template allows companies to assess their own maturity level in seven key areas and then use this to more effectively discuss the way forward with their partners.
IGD experts developed the system together with sustainability and procurement leaders, as well as with the involvement of organizations such as WRAP, WWF, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), FNET and 3Keel. The framework builds on the principles of the Food and Drink Federation’s (FDF) 2030 “Ambition” program and integrates industry best practices.
The initiative aims to simplify sustainability expectations, increase supply chain transparency, and support shared progress towards net zero emissions.
According to the companies involved in its development, the Framework could become an integral part of business planning and procurement processes in the future, helping manufacturers and suppliers to see more clearly their own sustainability performance and shared goals.
