A surge in vegetable prices
Last December food prices elevated by only 4.7 percent if compared with December 2017, but we had to pay 22.4 percent more for potatoes, fresh fruits and vegetables – reported the Central Statistical Office (KSH). The main reason of the increase in average prices was that 100,000 tons less vegetable was harvested last year than the usual 1.8 million tons. János Mika, a climatologist at Eszterházy Károly University told: fruit and vegetable yields are wavering primarily because of the climate change. Another problem is that on average there is less rain, but sometimes there is a major downpour, which erodes part of the soil. //
In November 2018 agricultural production prices grew by 4.4 percent from the level of November 2017 – reported the Central Statistical Office (KSH). This increase was the result of vegetable product prices growing by 9.1 percent and livestock/products of animal origin prices decreasing by 3.1 percent from the base period level. In January-November 2018 agricultural production price jumped 2.4 percent. Vegetable prices were 15 percent higher than in the same period of 2017, while fruit prices reduced by 15 percent. //
