Aldi supermarket to start selling holidays
The discount supermarket chain that has won thousands of new shoppers from its rivals this year, is expanding into a new market – holidays.
The German-owned group plans to cash in on the credit crunch by
launching Aldi Travel in January.
The business will sell city breaks, summer escapes and ski deals
through partnerships with hotel groups across Europe and expects to
attract as many as 250,000 customers a year.
The bargain basement
chain, which has more than 400 stores in the UK, will start selling
cheap city breaks from January. Prices will be fixed for four weeks,
and advertised via leaflets in-store, before being replaced by
another round of new offers. Customers can book all the holidays over
the phone or via the Aldi website, alditravel.co.uk.
The company
already sells holidays in its Austrian, Swiss and German branches
(there are 7,000 shops worldwide), and thinks Britain is finally
ready to start adding holidays to the supermarket trolley, too.
