We are over 2 million returned bottles, but there are still problems
Since the beginning of the year, metal, plastic and glass bottles can be exchanged in Hungary, as manufacturers can now only deliver beverage products to stores in such packaging. Although the transition was not smooth, there was a significant increase in the number of redemptions during the summer.
Bottle redemption started on the first of January, with the help of vending machines located in larger stores. Szilvia Szabó, head of producer responsibility systems at MOHU, told InfoRádio that around 29 million bottles have been returned since the beginning of the year. The last five million bottles were sold by consumers in the last few days.
“The amount of returned bottles is increasing enormously every day. By the end of the week, consumers had already returned 1.8 million bottles in one day. The system is on the rise, but we can see that it is a learning process, consumers, retailers, and managing this is a huge task for us too”
Szilvia Szabó said on InfoRádio. He added that hundreds of thousands of transactions take place every day, and the number of complaints is only around a hundred.
In most cases, the employees of the stores can also solve the possible errors of the machines. Szilvia Szabó explained that the staff have keys to the machines, so they can open the machine and remove stuck bottles, and change the printer paper if it runs out. The shops are also responsible for replacing the collection bags when they are full.
