Prices of light and heavy lamb continue to rise
According to European Commission data, the European Union’s imports of sheep and goats (live animals and meat) amounted to 42.9 thousand tonnes in January-March 2025, a decrease of 1.7 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest suppliers were the United Kingdom and New Zealand with a 94 percent share.

The volume of sheep and goat meat and live animals sold on the international market (24.8 thousand tonnes) increased by 1.7 percent compared to January-March 2024. In the European Union, the price of light lamb developed in line with seasonal effects in the first twenty-eight weeks of the year, being 8.8 percent higher in euro terms compared to the same period of the previous year. The price of heavy lamb increased by 11.8 percent over the same period.

According to KSH data, the volume of Hungary’s live lamb exports decreased by 22.4 percent (4.5 thousand tons) and the value by 13.6 percent (to 9.4 billion forints) in January-May 2025 compared to a year earlier. According to AKI PÁIR data, the average price of both light and heavy lamb in Hungary for the January-June 2025 period increased by 8.7 percent compared to a year earlier, the former to 2,049 forints/kilogram and the latter to 1,919 forints/kilogram.
