Hungary’s agricultural relations with the United Kingdom are further strengthened
Cooperation in the fields of agriculture and trade between Hungary and the United Kingdom must be further strengthened – stated István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture in London.
The Minister held talks with Daniel Zeichner, Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food Security at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Development, and Alistair Carmichael, Chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Development Committee of the House of Commons. The Minister explained that Europe must be able to provide its population with healthy food, despite the challenges facing agriculture, and must also maintain its role in world food security.
István Nagy also presented the agricultural objectives of the Hungarian EU Presidency with Daniel Zeichner, Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food Security
The Minister called the reduction of food waste a priority task. We must be ready to significantly reduce the amount of food waste at all levels of the food supply chain. The Minister also mentioned that there are further opportunities for further cooperation in the fields of innovation and research and development, as well as in trade relations. The United Kingdom remains a valuable market for premium foods, bottled Hungarian wines, vegetables and fruits, and animal feed – he added.
During the day, István Nagy also held talks with Alistair Carmichael, Chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Development Committee of the House of Commons
During the meeting, the Minister spoke about our country’s commitment to a farmer-centric agricultural policy, which we will also draw attention to as the EU Presidency. Hungary continues to prioritize competitive, crisis-resistant, sustainable, farmer-friendly and knowledge-based future agriculture. The minister said that it is a social expectation to make our created world better. This approach is also reflected in the Hungarian agricultural support system, which, for example, also helps to further improve soil structure. And farming is not a job, but a way of life. This fact must also be taken into account by the legislation. We must do everything in order to strengthen the safe food supply and preserve the liveable countryside – István Nagy emphasized.
