SPAR Austria removed approximately 5,300 tonnes of sugar from more than 380 own-brand products by the end of 2025, continuing its long-term commitment to sugar reduction.

This achievement is part of the retailer’s ‘Zucker-raus’ initiative, launched in 2019 and currently including around 50 partners.

Markus Kaser, deputy chair of the board of SPAR, said, “For us, less sugar means more quality and more genuine enjoyment in our SPAR brand products.

“In the recipes for our SPAR brand products, we focus on real, unadulterated taste, without relying on sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners.”

Increased Consumer Demand

SPAR Austria’s efforts align with rising consumer interest in healthier product options.

A recent study by Marketagent, conducted on behalf of SPAR, found that 48% of Austrians intend to reduce their sugar intake.

Among them, nearly 77% stated that they would prefer products containing less sugar.

To address that demand, SPAR continues to implement its ‘Zucker-raus’ initiative, launched in 2019.

The sugar reduction initiative aims to gradually lower sugar consumption in society, reinforcing the retailer’s broader nutrition strategy.

Sugar Intake Recommendations

The World Health Organisation (WHO) advises a daily sugar intake of less than 50 grams per person, while average consumption in Austria was at approximately 78 grams per day in 2023/24.

Survey indicates a discrepancy between perception and actual intake of sugar among consumers.

Seventy-eight percent of respondents believe they remain within the recommended range, whereas 22% estimate their daily consumption to be above 51 grams.

Through ongoing reformulations of its private-label product range, SPAR Austria aims to align more closely with recommendations from the WHO.
