Turin has been chosen as the European Capital of Smart Tourism
Turin, Italy, will be the European Smart Capital of Tourism in 2025, and Benidorm, Spain, will be the Green Pioneer of Smart European Tourism next year, the European Commission announced on Friday.
According to the announcement, Turin won the title because the city, known for its rich industrial heritage, is successfully transforming itself into a city that balances urban development with the preservation of cultural heritage and sustainability.
The city has transformed car factories into cultural sites, demonstrating its commitment to combining history and modern innovation. Its urban development program highlights the importance of preserving natural resources and promoting sustainable development.
Turin has taken steps to achieve the EU’s carbon neutrality target by 2030 through its commitment to low-emission mobility. The city’s green initiatives, such as the transformation of former industrial areas into green spaces and the development of public transport, demonstrate a strategic approach to sustainable tourism and urban planning.
According to a statement from Brussels, Benidorm was awarded the title of European Green Pioneer for Smart Tourism 2025 because it successfully integrates environmental protection, economic stability and social enrichment into its tourism strategy. The city’s commitment to greening improves the overall visitor experience and the quality of life of its residents, they wrote.
The award was created by the European Commission in 2018.
