Magazine: We spend more in discount stores than last year
In the January-May period there were rather significant changes in the market shares of retail channels. The population spent HUF 1,100 billion a day on FMCG products, from which discount stores managed to carve out a larger share in the first five months of 2011 than a year earlier. Two of the four discount chains expanded by two-digit numbers in terms of market share: in May 2010 50 percent of households went shopping to a discount store – by May 2011 their proportion rose to 53 percent. Discount stores are not the places for daily shopping, but thanks to their competitive prices and the growing number of units they are starting to threaten the positions of traditional retail channels.
