More compound fertilizers sold this year
Fertilizer distributors sold 1.053 million tons of fertilizer directly to farmers in the first three quarters of 2025, which was only 0.7 percent more than the amount a year earlier. Since the price of fertilizers increased by an average of 12.7 percent, according to the calculations of the Central Statistical Office, the net revenue from fertilizer sales was 17.5 percent (HUF 27.4 billion) higher than in the first three quarters of 2024. The 10 largest fertilizer distributors sold 88 percent of the total fertilizer volume directly to farmers in the period under review.
The total nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) active ingredient content of all fertilizers purchased by agricultural producers in the period under review was 376 thousand tons, 13.2 thousand tons (+3.6 percent) more than a year earlier, but 92.4 thousand tons higher than the level of the first nine months of 2023. The nitrogen active ingredient content was 4.2 percent lower, but the phosphorus active ingredient and potassium active ingredient contents were 22.6 and 23.6 percent higher, respectively, than in the base period. Among simple fertilizers, the active ingredient content of nitrogen-based fertilizers decreased by 6.8 percent, while that of potassium increased by 31.4 and that of phosphorus by 70.7 percent. The ratio of NPK active ingredients in the first three quarters of 2025 was 66:18:16, and in the same period of 2024 it was 71:15:14, i.e. nitrogen use decreased. In the third quarter of the current year, the distribution of NPK active ingredients was similar (32:36:32) to the same period of 2024 (35:35:30).
In terms of natural weight, 1.053 million tons of fertilizers were sold directly to agricultural producers in the first three quarters of 2025
Of which 777 thousand tons were single-component fertilizers and 276 thousand tons were compound fertilizers. The ratio of single-component and compound fertilizers was 74:26 in the first nine months of 2025, and 78:22 a year earlier, i.e. the ratio of simple fertilizers decreased. Distributors sold 5.9 percent less nitrogen fertilizer to end users in the first three quarters of 2025 compared to the same period a year earlier, while demand for phosphorus fertilizer increased by 46 percent and potassium by 30.6 percent. The volume of single-component nitrogen fertilizers decreased in natural weight in the third quarter of 2025, with distributors selling about 11.1 thousand tons (-14 percent) less compared to the same period in 2024. Lime ammonium nitrate (MAS) accounted for 39.6 percent of the total fertilizer turnover and more than half (55.7 percent) of single-component nitrogen fertilizer sales, with a total of 417 thousand tons sold, nearly 60 thousand tons less than in the same period in 2024. The second most popular product among solid fertilizers was untreated urea with 62.9 thousand tons, its quantity decreased by almost 2 thousand tons. Of compound fertilizers, 22 thousand tons more were sold – compared to single-component nitrogen fertilizers. Thus, the total amount of fertilizer sold in July, August and September increased by 6.5 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
