Eight out of ten Hungarians pack this in their backpack when they go on a trip
Spring, sunshine, fresh air – the hiking season is starting. The results of a recent, national, representative survey commissioned by PICK revealed that two-thirds of Hungarians hike regularly. Two out of three people like to hike in nature with their family or friends. We also found out what the perfect hiking sandwich looks like, and with the expert of the Hungarian Dietitians’ National Association (MDOSZ), we explored what aspects are worth considering when packing food for a hike.
Spring break is here, and with it the good weather – many people have already taken out their hiking boots and backpacks. It is expected that many people will set off on hikes and trips in the coming days. This is not surprising, as the survey commissioned by PICK also revealed that hiking is by far the most popular form of exercise. Two-thirds (69%) of Hungarians go hiking or trekking on some regular basis. Most people like to go hiking in company, with their family (47%) or friends (20%).
They also asked what the most important thing Hungarians take with them when they go hiking. Not surprisingly, food and drink were the most popular: eight out of ten people pack this for themselves when they go outdoors (81%).
However, it is not unimportant what kind of snacks go in the backpacks. The goal is to make it delicious and varied, so that children will be happy to eat it. It is also important that it is not too heavy and fits well in the backpack. Another aspect is that it does not need to be refrigerated and can be consumed easily, for example, it does not require a plate or cutlery. However, according to the dietician, there are even more things worth keeping in mind if we strive to eat consciously during our excursions.
“Our performance and well-being during hiking are also greatly influenced by our diet. We need energy for muscle work, mainly in the form of carbohydrates, and our body’s need for water and minerals is also higher at this time. A sandwich can also be an ideal travel snack, as depending on the composition, the high-quality proteins (e.g. salami, eggs) in it play an important role in muscle regeneration, grains (e.g. whole-grain bread) provide energy, their fiber content helps to keep blood sugar levels steady, and vegetables contribute to muscle function and fluid balance with their mineral content.”
– said Zsuzsanna Szűcs, president of the National Association of Hungarian Dietitians.
