Half of Hungarians without foreign work experience are open to working in another country, and this proportion is even higher among young people. Most of them would primarily target European countries. However, the biggest deterrent to working abroad, in addition to family reasons, is language barriers, according to a recent study by Profession.hu.

Hungary’s leading job portal, Profession.hu, surveyed the opinions of domestic workers without foreign work experience. The survey showed that although half of the aforementioned group would be willing to work abroad, family reasons (37%), language barriers (34%), and fear of uncertainty (28%) are often the most common deterrents.

Those who would be open to working abroad prefer European countries the most (90%), with Austria (65%), Germany (48%), Switzerland (47%), Spain (46%) and Italy (42%) being the most popular. Among the locations outside Europe, most would choose North American (31%) and Australian (30%) locations. Young people are more open

As with changing jobs, members of Generation Z are more open than their older counterparts about working abroad.

“The survey showed that while five out of ten employees would be willing to work abroad when examining the entire group, when narrowing it down to young people – those between 18 and 29 years old – the rate is seven out of ten. In the case of older people, openness in this area is less common: for 30-39 year olds, this rate is five out of ten, and for 40-49 year olds, it is four out of ten. Those working in Budapest are also more interested in similar opportunities than average, with six out of ten respondents considering working abroad,”

– said Blanka Dencső, a market research and business development expert at Profession.hu.

A significant portion of workers without foreign work experience would rely on their connections to find work abroad: half of them would also seek help from relatives and friends already working abroad, and 36 percent would look for information on a job search portal. The number of advertised foreign jobs has been continuously increasing in recent years, with employers posting more than ten thousand such opportunities on Profession.hu each year.
