Producers vs. retail chains
In June the European Parliament adopted Polish MEP Edward Czesak’s report on unfair trading practices in the food supply chain. The main goal of the report is the protection of small food producers and retail sellers against unfair practices of usually stronger trade partners. Selling below the price of production costs and large retailers using fruits, vegetables and dairy products for sales increasing purposes (selling them with a loss) – these practices threaten sustainable production in the EU, claims the report. MEPs stressed that an EU-level framework legislation is needed in this area, so that both producers and consumers can profit from fair conditions
