Tesco came up with completely new types of products
By the end of this year, Tesco expanded its range of products without added sugar, and also initiated cooperation with several Hungarian companies whose products increase the selection of vegan food. There is a growing demand for organic, protein-rich, vegetarian and vegan, free, carbohydrate-, salt- and fat-reduced products, as well as products containing no added sugar. Pénzcentrum asked Tamás Kámán, the purchasing director of the department store chain, about developments and trends.

Interest in healthy products has increased
“In July 2021, we announced our Central European cooperation with WWF, which promotes the transition to sustainable and affordable food consumption in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. WWF has defined 6 easy-to-remember principles, which we can follow on a daily basis to make more informed decisions , what and how we eat. These include eating more plant-based foods, less meat, and less high-fat, salty, and sugary foods. The guidelines are perfectly in line with the direction in which consumers are increasingly moving in Hungary, and in the region”
– Kámán told Pénzcentrum.
And what is the motivation behind purchasing the new product range from the consumer side?
“According to a survey carried out by Dunnhumby in November 2021 on behalf of Tesco, 53 percent of the respondents choose them for health reasons or for the purpose of disease prevention, 33 percent because of their health-focused lifestyle, while 32 percent want to lose weight with their help. For 78 percent of the respondents, conscious nutrition in vegetables and fruits it means a richer diet, and for 66 percent a reduction in sugar intake. 58 percent are those who pay attention to the ingredients and prefer to cook at home instead of buying ready-made meals, and 48 percent eat less processed food.”
– said the specialist.
