The Nyugati tér McDonald’s reopens completely renovated
Nyugati tér McDonald’s reopened today after the completion of the works that lasted more than half a year. Meki, which has been repeatedly chosen as one of the most beautiful McDonald’s restaurants in the world, has been completely renovated at a cost of HUF 1.8 billion, keeping the special interior design elements of the listed building and using natural architectural materials.
The unique McDonald’s, originally opened in 1990, received a new and special interior as the last stop of the Hungarian restaurant transformation program lasting several years. During the transformation, special care was taken to ensure that the building, located on the main wall shared with the Nyugati railway station, retains the unmistakable features of the neo-renaissance and neo-romanticism, just like the railway station.
The basis of the interior design was the RAY-design concept, named after the founder of the McDonald’s system, which was supplemented with unique mirrored glass surfaces, copper-clad lamps and several special furniture elements. In the case of fast food restaurants around the world, the fact that real, natural materials were used in the interior architecture is considered a specialty and a real rarity. The restaurant thus received a cast terrazzo floor, and wood, leather and copper coverings also appear in many places. The decorative painting of the interior spaces and pillars was carried out by a team of restorers in order to preserve and maintain the milieu and spirit of the times.
