Leadership change at BrewDog
James Watt, co-founder and CEO of BrewDog, steps down from his leadership role after 17 years, passing the baton to James Arrow, the COO. However, Watt is not leaving the company entirely; he continues in a newly created role of non-executive director and as “Captain and Co-founder,” he will also act as a strategic advisor shaping the future of the company. Watt had indicated his intention to step down last year to the board of directors, wanting to dedicate more time to other projects and interests, while retaining his 21% stake in the company.
BrewDog, known globally as a leading craft beer producer, has previously been in the spotlight due to various controversies, including those related to workplace culture. In response to an open letter about these issues, the company stated that it has heard and understood the concerns, and has made changes to its corporate culture since the letter’s publication. Watt apologized for past mistakes and acknowledged the need for changes.
Under Watt’s leadership, BrewDog saw significant growth, evolving from a garage in Fraserburgh into a global craft brewery that employs 2530 people worldwide, across more than 120 bars and four breweries. Allan Leighton, BrewDog’s chairman, praised Watt’s achievements and expressed his pleasure that the former CEO will continue to contribute to the company’s success. Watt’s departure marks the beginning of a new chapter in BrewDog’s history, while he continues to play a key role in determining the company’s future direction.
