The “Supermenza” program was launched in the municipal schools of District 1 in the fall, fundamentally transforming the usual practice of public catering. In the new system, children can decide for themselves what and how much they put on their plates, which both reduces food waste and increases the dining experience – writes Index.

In traditional canteens, it is common for most of the food to end up in the trash: many students do not even taste the dishes served. This is wasteful and does not contribute to healthy nutrition. The goal of the Supermenza is for children to be full, taste a variety of foods, and in the process learn that food is valuable.

“The free-choice canteen is not only environmentally friendly, but also develops children’s decision-making skills. This way, they will be much more open to trying new flavors,” said Csaba Enyedi, communications director of Hungast.

Students can choose from two main courses and take as much as they actually eat. The system also allows for faster eating, which is especially important during short lunch breaks. Hungast uses playful educational tools – such as graphics – to help with conscious portioning.

Initial experiences are encouraging: dishes such as catfish paprikash, mushroom stew or grilled liver, which previously remained almost untouched, are now consumed in much greater proportion.

The introduction of the free-to-eat system required a significant investment: new warmers, child-friendly counters and a larger capacity for ingredients had to be provided. Despite this, the feedback is clear: children, parents and teachers are also satisfied.

“Everyone can see that the system works and is happy with the change. Today, concerns have been completely dispelled,” said László Böröcz, Mayor of Budavár.

In the next step, children will be able to choose from three main courses, including one meat-free course. In addition, new counters will be introduced that serve both selective waste collection and used tableware disposal.

So Supermenza is not just a form of catering, but also a change in attitude: less waste, healthier habits and a greater experience in the school cafeteria.
