SZÉP card: 49 billion forints spent in August, 5.5 percent increase
In August, SZÉP cardholders spent a total of 49.1 billion forints on their cards, which was 5.5 percent more than in the same period of the previous year, according to a statement by the Ministry of National Economy.
The value of top-ups amounted to 26.5 billion forints in the month, while the number of acceptance points continued to expand: the card can now be used in more than 160 thousand locations, 8.2 percent more than a year earlier.
Among the accommodations, the units in Lake Balaton recorded the highest revenue thanks to SZÉP card payments: card spending accounted for 9.8 percent of domestic accommodation spending there. The highest proportion was in the Sopron–Fertő region, where 16.3 percent of revenue came from this source. In Budapest, SZÉP card accommodation spending increased by 26.1 percent in August.
A total of 2.8 million guests arrived at tourist accommodation facilities in August, 5.2 percent more than a year earlier. The number of guest nights reached 7.3 million, of which domestic guests spent nearly 4 million. The number of domestic guests was 1.5 million, which represented an increase of 1 percent.
In the first eight months of the year, the total value of SZÉP card top-ups exceeded HUF 310 billion, and spending exceeded HUF 327.8 billion. This represents an increase of 5.6 percent in the former case and 10.7 percent in the latter case compared to the same period in 2024.
