According to climate researcher Péter Szabó and meteorologist Rita Pongrácz, the probability of more drought years has not increased on a national average over the past 50 years, but the probability that when there is a drought, it is more severe, has increased significantly, as the number of dry days in spring and summer sums. This change in the southern half of the country can clearly be attributed to the summer growth, they wrote.
It is important that severely droughty spring and summer half-years do not become more frequent in Hungary – emphasized the experts, adding: “for this, the international community, including Hungary, must drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, and we must fundamentally rethink our water management, prioritizing the water retention”.
