In 2025, 1 trillion plastic bags will be produced worldwide annually – that’s 31,710 bags per second. If we were to chain them together, they would circle the Earth 4,200 times. On average, we only use a bag for 12–15 minutes, while it can take 20–1,000 years to decompose. The price of short-term convenience is a long-term environmental debt. In the European Union, 29.8 billion lightweight plastic carrier bags were used in 2022, or 66.6 bags per person. This could mean several million bags per year in Pécs.

Plastic does not disappear – it only transforms

Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, and plastic has been found in the stomachs of 90% of seabirds. The problem is not far off: microplastics have been detected in salt, air, food and human blood. According to some estimates, up to 5 grams – a teaspoon – of plastic can enter our bodies every week. Soil is no exception: 200 to 7,400 pieces of microplastic have been measured per kilogram in agricultural areas. The process is simple:

soil → vegetables → food → people. This is also present in Pécs.

The right decision is made locally

The Pécs Vásárcsarnok is the center of local food supply, visited by 40,000 people per week and employing nearly 150 businesses. We, the people of Pécs, buy quality, even locally produced goods here – but if we ask for a new bag every time, we unnecessarily increase the environmental burden.

It is not enough to use a canvas bag: sustainability depends on its use and the way it is produced. Both paper bags and canvas bags are worth using several times.

Now we can act together to put an end to plastic consumption!

The message of the ZöldÉrt campaign: “Set limits on plastic!”

It aims to reduce the number of single-use plastics in the Pécs Market Hall and thus in the city as well. Through the Green Vendors, we provide free Green Ért canvas bags and vegetable and fruit nets to customers who are not yet environmentally conscious, which were sewn by women with disabilities in the Maltese Charity Service Workshop in Pécs and designed by artists from Pécs.

The most important players in the program are theGreen Vendors that is, those mainly vegetable, fruit and dairy product vendors in the Pécs Market Hall who have applied for this commitment. Currently, 25 Green Vendors are participating in the program, who can be identified by a sign. At the same time, each vendor receives a GreenEarth tarpaulin, which is used to cover the goods.

  • Campaign period: March 16, 2026 – April 2026 4.
  • Workshops: March 27-28 and April 02 and 04.

During the campaign period, Pécs artist Dorottya Kanics’s giant bag installation and exhibition will draw attention to the problems caused by plastic bags. The expert background for the campaign is provided by Amrein Tamásné Miskolczi Boglárka, sociologist, horticultural engineer, nature-based production systems expert and ambassador of the European Climate Pact.

In addition to the free canvas bags and vegetable bags available at ZöldÁrus, we will also give customers a badge with the inscription “I don’t want bags!” so that sellers can see how many people there are who want to actively work to reduce plastic bags.

During the campaign, an exclusive multi-compartment bag will be available for purchase. data-contrast=”auto”>ZöldÉrt designer bags can be won with our prize draw on the city’s social media platforms.

During the workshops taking place over the two weekends, interested parties can receive help in using alternative packaging: canvas bags can be screened, decorated with plant motifs, made into bags, beeswax scarves from T-shirts, etc. Local civil organizations will help us with these.

Following the program, in July, during thePlastic-Free Month Vásárcsarnok’s birthday, we will return with our Set the Limits on Plastic! program.
