For the time being, the problem is in Transdanubia with a grape disease called golden yellowing of grapes, which is spread by the American vine that settled in the country in 2006. The insect is now present in all parts of Hungary, which favors the spread of the disease, as it can only be controlled by reducing the population of vines and preventing them from settling on the plantation. In addition, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) also assists farmers with a map indicating the location of cicadas detection and the developmental status of the insect.

The American grapefruit was first detected in Hungary in 2006, in Csorna – László Jordán, Director of Plant, Soil and Agri-Environmental Protection of the National Food Chain Safety Office, recalled the beginnings of the pest’s spread here on InfoRádió. At that time, however, no phytoplasma infection had been detected in it, only the animal itself was present. The pest from the American continent is responsible for the spread of an epizootic plant disease with a 40-50 percent reduction in grape yield, the golden jaundice phytoplasma disease. In the case of susceptible varieties, capital can be destroyed in a few years.
