There is no circular breakthrough without a strategy – survey on the domestic state of the circular economy
64 percent of Hungarian companies leading the sustainable transition already use some kind of circular model in their business activities, but complex solutions are not yet typical, according to the latest survey by the Hungarian Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSDH). According to the research, conducted with the professional support of KPMG, circular integration is stagnating, but the development potential is very significant.
According to the results of the BCSDH survey, stagnation can be seen in the circular economy in Hungary: a paradigm shift is still pending, as the principles and application of the circular economy have not yet spread in depth among companies. Less complex circular economic models continue to enjoy an advantage.
Lack of a complex and strategic approach
“We launched the Circular Economy Platform almost 10 years ago, with the aim of promoting the circular transition in Hungary by collaborating across sectors and exploiting synergies. An important result is that 75 percent of leading companies already have a circular objective and 49 percent of them measure their circular performance,”
said Irén Márta, Director of BCSDH, at the event presenting the results of the research. She added that companies are beginning to recognize that this is a complex business tool that can simultaneously contribute to cost efficiency, improving security of supply, developing new business models and achieving decarbonization goals.
At the same time, she also mentioned that only 21 percent of companies have a circular economy strategy. According to Irén Márta, accelerating the circular transition is only possible through knowledge sharing, showing good examples, presenting opportunities and the latest innovations, and above all, through collaboration. The forum for this will be the European Circular Economy HOTSPOT, which will be organized by the BCSDH in Budapest between October 5 and 7, and will offer international and domestic knowledge and practical inspiration to the business sector.
