The state of things – Part 2
Our magazine continued to ask László Kovács, president of the (MVI) about topical issues.
VAT law: In order to make the regulation on the preferential VAT rate easily understandable and applicable, we have already submitted our modification ideas to the authorities. The current law wants to do good, but the rules were created without any professional input, therefore they are difficult to understand and comply with.
BKIK talks: We are happy that the BKIK has become more active and we try to profit from the opportunities offered by BKIK. I do hope that through this channel our opinion will reach the places that are important to us.
Personnel changes in interest representing organisations: The planned integration of the Pannon Gastronomy Academy (PGA) into the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association (MSZÉSZ) will make the work of MSZÉSZ more efficient. PGA’s new president Balázs Csapody will breathe new life into the trade’s interest representation.
Public sector catering: I think it is very difficult for businesses to survive in this segment, even more so because the VAT didn’t decrease in this segment. Due to this salaries can’t be raised and this will make it even harder to keep or recruit workers.
Trade statistics: Data made public by Opten recently indicate a sales growth in 2015 and more employees working in the sector, but most of this is just the result of the introduction of online cash registers and frequent inspections.
Restaurant rankings: These are always very subjective, often they seem biased and because of this the rankings aren’t credible.
Youth competitions: EuroSkills will be organised in Hungary next year, so it is very important to select the best young talents who have the chance to perform well.
