Dioxin found in pork in Germany

Germany's poisoned eggs scare has now spread to pork with investigators reporting raised levels of cancer-causing dioxin in pigs at a farm in Lower Saxony.

This follows on from an admission on Sunday that chickens had also been contaminated in the scandal which shut down thousands of farms in Germany. The regional ministry of agriculture in Hanover admitted Tuesday that high levels of cancer-causing dioxins were found on the farm near Verden.

The suspicion was that the pig feed was tainted by the same chemicals supplied by the firm Harles&Jentzsch that poisoned eggs which entered the UK food chain in the form of mayonnaise, pastry goods and other supermarket products. The pigs are now being slaughtered and their carcasses will be burned.
