Regarding business, Shanghai enjoys far more significance the Beijing. The city was opened to foreign merchants in 1842 following the first opium war. Population reached 1 million by 1900. After the communist take over in 1947, Shanghai turned into a dull industrial city. It only began to recover following the death of Mao. Spectacular development began in the 1980’s, leading to Shangai becoming the business capital of China with a population of over 20 million.
