Cheese-cocoa-peach jam: these are the most popular cookie flavors
Hungarians like savory pastries the most, and among them, the cheese scone is still the unshakable king – according to the nationally representative public opinion poll conducted by the Pek-Snack Group. According to the taste map, the local favorites are the cocoa snail and the cottage cheese bag, which are hit products only in our country and are less well-known in our regional neighbors. Among the doughnuts, we like the apricot jam and chocolate ones the most, but the strawberry-fruit flavors also made it to the third place on the podium. The results of the research go beyond taste preferences: they indicate that fine bakery goods have now become a stable, regular consumption category in Hungarian households.
The regionally active Pek-Snack Group explored domestic preferences related to fine bakery goods purchasing habits in a nationally representative survey. According to the results, 68 percent of Hungarians consume products belonging to the convenience category daily or several times a week, and another 14 percent consume them at least weekly. Fine bakery products have thus become a stable part of everyday meals, with a growing trend.
The research also covered favorite types and flavors. According to the results, both savory and sweet categories are popular in Hungary, but savory pastries are leading: 77 percent of respondents indicated that they enjoy consuming this category. According to Zoltán Novák, CEO of Pek-Snack, the results confirm that the category has become a defining element of the convenience segment: fine baked goods have now become an integral part of daily meals. Consumers expect both well-known flavors and fast, fresh solutions, which ensures balanced market expansion with more moderate economic exposure. He added: The stability of the category is also shown by the fact that it is characterized by balanced demand even during economically more difficult and inflationary periods.
Among the products, pogácsa is the most popular in our country (62%), followed by cocoa snail (40%) and cottage cheese bag (28%). It is interesting that while pogácsa is popular everywhere according to Pek-Snack’s regional data, cocoa snail and cottage cheese bag are not among the favorites among our neighbors, for example, burek is the most popular among the South Slavs. This clearly shows that a portfolio tailored to local tastes provides a competitive advantage in regional operations.
The popularity of pogácsa has been unwavering among Hungarian consumers for many years, but which flavor is the winner? The results of the survey left no doubt: the cheese solution clearly won, with a significant lead (76%). Even the crispy (38%) and potato (26%) versions made it to the top.
Pek-Snack’s national research also covered a growing product category, donuts. These are basically sweet pastries and are more of a snack. Based on the results, the winner was clear here too, namely the apricot jam flavor (61%), followed by the chocolate (46%) and strawberry-fruit (31%) versions.
It is also clear that purchasing fine pastries is a practice established in most families: those who buy such products most often purchase the necessary quantity not only for themselves, but for the entire household. 73.9 percent of those who buy baked goods buy not only for their own consumption but also for their household, while only 22.8 percent buy such products exclusively for themselves. This suggests that the category is not merely an impulse purchase, but is part of a conscious, regular shopping decision.
