The Romanian authorities prevented the smuggling of 40 million illegal cigarettes during three months
The Romanian authorities have prevented the smuggling of 40 million illegal cigarettes in the last three months and more than 300 people were arrested for suspected cigarette smuggling – the British American Tobacco announced on Tuesday.
The Bucharest authorities have been pursuing an anti-smuggling campaign for the last three months aimed at curbing illegal tobacco products. The value of the seized illegal products reaches 30 million leis (more than 2 billion forints).
As a result of the denser controls, the Romanian black market’s size decreased by 1 percentage point compared to the beginning of the year, as 15.2 percent of cigarettes distributed in Romania came from smuggling at the end of March, compared to the 16.2 percent in January. (MTI)
