Explosive candy and golden dumplings are also available, but jelly candy is still the most popular
Szaloncukor is a traditionally popular product of the Advent season. According to the map of the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK), each household buys 1 kilo of brown sugar every year, the most popular being jelly, marzipan, coconut, caramel and chocolate cream.
According to information from the Association of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers, consumers in Hungary buy nearly 3,500 tons of brown sugar every year. With the exception of 2020, which was hit hard by the coronavirus, the sale of brown sugar shows an increasing trend every year, and is considered one of the most popular seasonal products during the Christmas period.
Each household buys an average of 1 kilo of brown sugar per year, and the most popular flavors are still jelly, marzipan, coconut, caramel and chocolate cream.
Premium sweets have become particularly popular in the last ten years, this kind of sweets can also be a gift. At the same time, the demand for these more expensive products – due to inflation – seems to be decreasing somewhat. Despite this, sugar-free, vegan and other alternative sweets are still in demand.
