Financial assistance has arrived for smaller, economically more vulnerable corn farmers who were in a difficult situation due to last year’s severe drought. Based on applications submitted in July, the Hungarian State Treasury began transferring more than 16,000 forints per hectare, thus disbursing 6.43 billion forints in the penultimate week of September, informed József Viski, State Secretary for Agricultural and Rural Development Support at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The State Secretary reminded that last summer, farmers who grew spring-sown arable crops, including corn, had to deal with a severe drought. Thanks to the damage mitigation system, more than 25 billion forints were paid out. However, the ministry also requested assistance from the EU crisis fund to provide exceptional assistance to small farmers in difficult financial situations. As a result, the European Commission awarded Hungary EUR 16.2 million in exceptional aid. Following the submission of applications in July and their processing, the Hungarian State Treasury paid HUF 6.43 billion in aid to 58,065 farmers on 23 September 2025. Under the measure, the farmers concerned received HUF 16,535 per hectare, taking into account the available funds and the eligible maize area.
