Grape and fruit producers affected by spring frost may receive extraordinary support
Thanks to the successful Hungarian agricultural lobby, Hungary will receive support from the European Union in the amount of 10.8 million euros, or 4.2 billion forints, to help producers affected by spring frost damage. All grape and fruit producers with a certified loss exceeding a 30 percent yield reduction will be eligible for this support, in addition to the damage reduction allowance, announced István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture.

The spring frost significantly affected orchards, and in some places the extent of the damage reached 90 percent of the crop. In this situation, the Ministry of Agriculture, based on consultation with the sectoral interprofessional organization, created the opportunity to pay part of the damage reduction allowance in advance. This allowed a total of 1.45 billion forints to reach the farmers who suffered damage in August.
István Nagy said that the ministry subsequently turned to the European Commission to provide funds from the agricultural crisis reserve to compensate for the damage caused by frost
According to last week’s decision, the opportunity has been opened for 7 member states, including Hungary, for agricultural sectors hit by adverse climatic events to receive emergency financial support. The budget available to our country must be paid to beneficiaries who suffered frost damage by April 30, 2026. Farmers who suffered damage will also receive assistance from the damage mitigation fund in the usual way, under the appropriate conditions, he added. The Minister of Agriculture reminded that by May 31, 2025, almost 6,000 damage reports had been received on the electronic damage reporting platform for more than 37 thousand hectares.
