Extraordinary support for corn producers hit by drought
Due to last year’s severe drought, the Ministry of Agriculture is providing new support to smaller, more economically vulnerable corn producers. The application for support can be submitted to the Hungarian State Treasury between July 1 and 15, 2025, and it is expected that those affected will receive support of about 15-20 thousand forints per hectare, announced Minister of Agriculture István Nagy.

The minister explained that farmers also faced a severe drought last summer, which primarily affected spring-sown arable crops, with a special focus on corn. Thanks to the damage mitigation system, more than 25 billion forints were paid out.
The ministry has also requested assistance from the EU crisis fund to provide extraordinary assistance to small producers in financial difficulty
In March this year, the European Commission decided that the most needy farmers among those affected could receive a total of 16.2 million euros in forints. The minister added that the experience of recent years shows that the increasingly dry weather in our country affects corn, one of our most important cereals, the cultivation of which poses an economic challenge, especially for farmers with smaller areas of less than 150 hectares. The Ministry of Agriculture has therefore developed a new program, the beneficiaries of which are producers who, based on their single application submitted in 2024, have an area of up to 150 hectares, of which support will be available for up to 50 hectares of corn-growing area. In order to ensure that no affected corn producer is left out of the application process, the Hungarian State Treasury will send detailed information about the opportunity – emphasized István Nagy, who highlighted that the administrative process has become simpler and faster for farmers, since in addition to their support ID, producers only need to make the declarations necessary for the use of the support. The Treasury will disburse the support to them by September 30, 2025 at the latest.
