Heartening domestic retail data
According to KSH’s report, after a 0.6-percent growth in January, retail turnover in Hungary stagnated in February, but the annual downturn diminished from 5.6 to 4.3 percent. In terms of volume, retail turnover was 4.3 percent lower in February than in the same period the previous year. Domestic retail network and mail order companies generated sales of HUF 485 billion in February (HUF 974 billion in the first two months).
Food and food type stores realised 47 percent of retail sales; the turnover of food stores decreased by 2.9 percent in terms of volume, compared to February 2009. Hypermarkets, supermarkets and small shops (which represent 91 percent of sales) sold 3.6 percent less in volume.
