More than 2.6 million bottles returned in a few months – Kifli.hu customers are becoming more and more aware of sustainability. In May and June, over 500 thousand beverage packaging was returned with orders on a monthly basis.

At Kifli.hu, sustainability is not just a goal, but one of the cornerstones of everyday operations. The online supermarket uniquely contributes to the mandatory return system and offers its customers the opportunity to return empty beverage packaging to couriers when placing an order. The popularity of the initiative is clearly demonstrated by the dynamic increase in the number of returned bottles in recent months: so far, a total of 2,662,549 bottles have been returned to couriers by Kifli.hu customers. According to the latest data, an average of 443 thousand bottles are returned to Kifli.hu’s warehouse per month, but the willingness to return was even higher in May and June. In both months, the number of beverage packaging collected was over 500 thousand.

The system is simple: customers can return up to ten empty plastic or metal beverage bottles per order in the official Kiflis return bag. This transparent plastic bag will be automatically attached to every order from June 2025, but a new bag can also be requested from the courier during any order. It is important that the returned packaging is intact, clean, rinsed, and has a clearly legible barcode and MOHU logo, otherwise the system cannot credit its value. The bottles must not be crushed or dented, as they are not suitable for machine reading. The company credits the returned bottles in the form of a coupon.

The success of the bottle return system not only shows that customers are open to sustainable solutions, but also confirms that environmental awareness and convenience are not mutually exclusive. That is why Kifli.hu strives to translate environmental objectives into real, tangible measures in all areas of its operations – from the logistics background to product packaging to the delivery system.

Part of the company’s long-term environmental strategy is to prioritize sustainable packaging solutions for its own-brand products, where feasible. For example, it uses paper boxes or paper bags as primary packaging for vegetables, fruits and baked goods. The goal is to minimize food waste and the impact on the environment – while making the green choice simple, convenient and encouraging for customers.
