SPAR and the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service deliver the saved food to those in need
SPAR Hungary has been a strategic partner of the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service for more than a quarter of a century and cooperates with the organization that helps disadvantaged people in many areas. And thanks to their new joint initiative, which came into effect in September 2022, regular, daily food donations are delivered to places where the need is greatest.
Last year, SPAR joined the Munch food rescue app, which allows customers to save food from ending up in the bin. After a six-month test period, starting this June, all SPAR and INTERSPAR stores will offer customers the opportunity to access product packages with the Munch application, up to 66 percent cheaper, depending on the stocks. If it is not possible to sell the affected foodstuffs through Munch, even then the good quality goods will not be lost, because thanks to the cooperation with the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service, they will be given directly to needy families, the elderly, the sick and the homeless.
“Since last September, we have delivered nearly 174 tons of food of impeccable quality with the help of the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service to people in difficult circumstances through our food rescue program. The organization currently has a permanent relationship with 27 SPAR and INTERSPAR stores. On average, 150 boxes of food donations, typically vegetables, fruit, baked goods, and meat and dairy products, are delivered to people in need from these locations.
– said Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary. He added: in the coming weeks, three more stores across the country are expected to join the noble cause.
