The poultry industry is booming again
Dr Attila Csorbai, president and managing director of the Hungarian Poultry Product Board informed that because of the bird flu more than 3 million chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese had to be killed by the authorities between December 2016 and March 2017. The government paid compensation to poultry farmers for their loss, but Hungarian poultry products were banned in many foreign markets. It was good news for the sector in 2017 that the VAT on poultry meat and eggs dropped to 5 percent.

As regards the poultry meat market, the European Union has suffered several blows recently. For instance the most important export market, South Africa closed the door on EU poultry. It must also be mentioned that it is difficult to comprehend the various rules and regulations of certain international trade agreements at the moment.
Further good news for the Hungarian poultry industry: if the price and the quality are the same, 95 percent of shoppers put the Hungarian product in their baskets. The product board’s Koronás Tojás egg trademark guarantees that shoppers buy top quality eggs. Mr Csorbai hopes that in the next few years Central Europe’s role in poultry production will become more significant. In 3-5 years’ time the president wants Hungary to produce as much eggs as the country needs, so that it won’t rely on import. //
