A Portuguese retail group is expanding in the region
The Portuguese Jerónimo Martins retail group is also expanding outside of Poland and is targeting the Slovakian market in 2024. The company group has already registered the Biedronka brand and some trademarks for expansion in Slovakia. According to the plans, the first store will be opened in the neighboring country at the end of 2024.
Until now, Jerónimo Martins was only present in Poland and Colombia with the Biedronka brand. During the new initiative in Slovakia, the company is building its infrastructure from scratch and plans not only traditional stores, but also a pharmacy network. There are already 3,500 stores operating under the Biedronka brand in Poland, which is the country’s largest chain.
Expansion in Slovakia will be a challenge for Biedronka, as Tesco is one of the leading companies in the Slovak retail sector, and Biedronka will meet an old rival here. Although Tesco withdrew from Poland in 2020, it still has a strong presence in Slovakia. Biedronka will also compete with local Lidl stores.
