Hungarian winemakers are pessimists
Despite the weather challenges, the grape growers managed to harvest more grapes from the vines, but the average yield is still low. Due to the energy crisis, the price of the necessary materials also increased, and the cost of labor also increased, which made production even more difficult.
This year’s grape harvest in the Villányi Wine Region of Somogy and in other parts of the country also brought difficulties due to the changeable weather and production challenges. As a result of climate change, heavy rains and heat waves were common during the spring and summer, which caused serious plant protection problems in the vineyards.
Per capita wine consumption has decreased significantly in Hungary in recent years: mainly white wines are in demand, especially sauvignon blanc. However, the good news is that demand for quality wine has remained strong and Sauvignon Blanc continues to grow in popularity.
The results of this year’s harvest can only be determined precisely after the harvest, but the producers are already prepared for the difficulties.
