METRO urges partners to operate sustainably
According to a forecast by the UN’s Economic and Social Affairs Department, the Earth’s population will be 9.7 billion by 2050 and it will go above 11 billion by the year 2100. This population growth will entail increased resource use; therefore METRO supports values all over the world such as food safety, sustainable agricultural production, responsible fishing, also raising awareness of not having enough fresh water. Sustainable energy utilisation is central to the METRO’s pledges as well.

METRO
Imre Horváth, CEO of METRO Hungary told that METRO serves several million customers in a responsible way every day, and they also urge partners to make their operations sustainable. For instance from 2020 METRO will only use palm oil from sustainable sources in product manufacturing. In shaping the company’s private label product portfolio, METRO has included several biodegradable products made from sugar cane and bamboo. The wholesaler’s goal is to change the consumption habits of customers.
Since single-use plastics with a green alternative will be banned in the European Union from 2021, METRO is already offering private label cutlery, plates, drinking straws, etc. made from paper, wood, bamboo or other compostable materials. All the important information and symbols are indicated on these products for buyers. METRO is keen on making changes that can help to save our planet: more and more alternative, biodegradable products will appear in the product portfolio, plus METRO will do its best to persuade partners to become greener in their operations.
