Thanks to the work and diligence of farmers, the country’s bread is assured, the autumn barley harvest has been completed, and more than half of the wheat has been stored – announced István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, on his social media page.

The head of the ministry emphasized that work is in full swing in the fields. The autumn barley harvest began in mid-June and is now essentially complete. The national average yield is 5.6 tons/hectare. The autumn wheat harvest is also progressing at a steady pace, and despite the rainy weather of the past few days, it is already at more than 50 percent. There are also large differences in the yields so far, the average is 5.3 tons/hectare, but this does not yet accurately illustrate the results expected nationwide.

Farmers in many places are still waiting for the other autumn cereals to ripen

In many places, rye and oats were harvested and sold as silage. The harvest of spring barley has been completed on 45 percent of the area, the average yield so far is 5.3 tons/hectare. 61 percent of rapeseed has been harvested, the yield on a national average is 2.3 tons/hectare. The harvest of seed peas has essentially been completed, the harvest is 96 percent complete, the average yield so far is around 2.5 tons/hectare, he added.

The minister also mentioned that the capacity of crop storage facilities is adequate, farmers do not have to expect any logistical disruptions

Crop prices are typically above the levels of a year ago, around 10-15 percent for cereals, and a slightly higher price increase for oilseeds in the case of sunflower and rapeseed in one year. The country’s supply of summer-harvested crops is assured, and several million tons may be exported. István Nagy emphasized that we owe a debt of gratitude to the farmers, because with their diligence and perseverance they set an example for all of us. Despite the challenges caused by the extreme weather, they are doing everything they can to ensure that daily bread can be put on the tables of Hungarian families, for which we cannot be grateful enough.
