PENNY and Munch’s food rescue initiative is a success
Since February 2024, Munch surprise packages have been available in PENNY stores across Hungary, saving over 70,000 food packages from waste, nearly doubling the results of the collaboration over the past year. Customers can purchase these food packages at a discount of at least 50%, which include vegetables, fruits, and mixed food items.
The initiative aims to reduce food waste and enable consumers to access quality food at favorable prices. Earlier this year, the collaboration between PENNY Hungary and Munch escalated when all the chain’s stores in Hungary joined the platform. To date, customers have saved food worth 105 million HUF from being discarded.
According to Kazatsay Eszter, PENNY’s communication manager, interest in the food rescue service has not diminished, particularly in Pest, Komárom-Esztergom, and Baranya counties. Kirill Perepelica, co-founder of Munch, noted that the project has had a significant international impact, saving nearly three million food packages worldwide, greatly aided by PENNY’s cooperation in both Hungary and the Czech Republic.
The Munch surprise packages can be purchased through the Munch app and picked up at a selected PENNY store at a predetermined time. The packages contain products with short expiration dates or non-standard shapes that are still perfectly fit for consumption.
