Russia: the expansion in various channels promises growth
Since the four biggest Russian FMCG retailers are expanding in the direction of new, growing sales channels, their share from the top 20’s sales will reach 74.3 percent by 2020 – in 2014 this share was 67.5 percent. Market leader X5 group wants to strengthen its presence in the supermarket channel, Magnit is turning to drugstores, while Krasznoje&Bjeloje, Bristol, and Lenta dominate in the large floor-space store channel. In recent years there has been a boom in Russia with the concept of discount minimarkets located in residential areas. This seems to have come to a halt. The top 20 retailers have acquired approximately 35,000 small shops all over Russia; plus in three from the last four years they opened nearly 5,000 new stores.
