”We can only harvest a small crop of poor quality at a huge cost” – farmers are in trouble
The rain arrived late in the eastern regions of the country, barely mitigating the damage caused by the historic drought. Farmers say that most of the crops are so burnt or withered that the rainfall has not helped them. However, there were regions where the crop was still saved. In Nógrád, a farmer stopped harvesting for silage at the last moment because he noticed that the corn had started to grow. ATV News report.

Rain arrived too late, and wasn’t even enough
This year’s crop could no longer be saved by the rain that fell in the eastern part of the country in recent days. Around Debrecen, the corn was almost completely destroyed. The plant can only be used for animal feed after ensiling. The manager of one of the largest companies says that they can only harvest a tenth of the usual amount, and moreover, it is much more expensive than usual.
– Barna Forgács, managing director of Agrárgazdaság Kft., told our news station.
The 8-10 millimeters of precipitation of the last few days did not mean much in this orchard either. In the case of peaches, the rain also hinders the producers, because fungal diseases appear at the worst time:
“Unfortunately, the few millimeters of precipitation we received can start fungal processes, secondary fungal processes due to the suction of the bugs. In fact, it significantly reduces the market value of the goods,”
explained Norbert Tóth, farmer.
