Atacadão, the cash-and-carry unit of Grupo Carrefour Brasil, has launched sales of individually traceable beef from the Brazilian state of Pará.

This initiative, which kicked off in the state capital, Belém, is a collaboration with the State Government of Pará, JBS/Friboi, and the Nature Conservancy (TNC), ESM Magazine reports.

It’s part of Pará’s Sustainable Livestock Programme, which aims for all meat from the state to be free from illegal deforestation and individually traceable by 2027.

The first 12-tonne batch of traceable beef is being sold at Atacadão’s Icoaraci and Portal da Amazônia stores.

The system uses electronic ear tags and Pará’s Individual Bovine Traceability System (SRBIPA) to track each animal, from birth to slaughter, ensuring socio-environmental compliance and transparency for consumers.

Forest Fund

Grupo Carrefour Brasil’s involvement is funded by its R$50 million (€9.3 million) Forest Fund, which is allocated to conservation projects and combatting deforestation.

Of this amount, R$10 million (€1.86 million) is specifically allocated to this TNC partnership.

This funding supports the acquisition and application of electronic ear tags, provides free technical assistance to small and medium-sized producers for environmental regularisation and credit access, and encourages sustainable production practices among meatpackers and retailers.

Nelcina Tropardi, VP of corporate affairs, ESG, and legal affairs at Grupo Carrefour Brasil, emphasised that individual traceability allows for more precise compliance analysis, including indirect suppliers, and connects consumers to the product’s origin, supporting local producers and forest protection.

Marco Oliveira, CEO of Atacadão, stated that Pará is demonstrating that quality, responsible and compliant production is achievable and accessible.

This initiative is guided by Grupo Carrefour Brasil’s Forest Committee and reinforces the retailer’s traceability and socio-environmental initiatives, contributing to Amazon conservation and a more responsible value chain.
