Small producers welcome consumers with open doors
Local producers across Hungary are opening their doors to consumers. During the Open Farm Gate Days, more than 150 family farms, wineries, and artisan workshops will welcome visitors between 23 August and 5 October 2025, offering a glimpse into rural life, animal husbandry, crop production, and gastronomy.
In recent years, several successful local initiatives have helped spotlight regional producers. This year, however, the Open Farm Gate Days will allow consumers to connect with small-scale producers through a nationwide event series. Organised by the Rural and Regional Development Support Unit of the Herman Ottó Institute Nonprofit Ltd., the program is supported by the National Chamber of Agriculture, the Hungarian Cycling Tourism Association, the Stylish Countryside Restaurants Association (SVÉT), the Kislépték Association, and the Pannon Local Product Cluster.
Between 23 August and 5 October 2025, more than 150 family farms, wineries, and artisan producers across Hungary will open their gates to the public. Visitors can explore rural life and experience animal keeping, agriculture, and culinary traditions. The Open Farm Gate Days will feature local product tastings, guided tours, artisan workshops, and interactive experiences such as pumpkin seed oil pressing and tasting, essential oil production, vegetable fermentation, sourdough baking, and traditional Szatmár plum jam cooking.
The aim of the series is to raise awareness of agrotourism and enhance the visibility and accessibility of experience-based rural programs. Organisers hope to foster networking opportunities and strengthen ties between local producers and consumers, supporting the development of short supply chains. The initiative also provides small-scale farmers with a new tool to diversify their agricultural activities and become more resilient and competitive.
The 2025 Open Farm Gate Days dates and regional locations are:
- 23 August – All About Szatmár-Bereg
- 20–21 September – Sváb Sarok and Surroundings
- 27 September – Treasures of Kisalföld
- 27–28 September – Iron Curtain Region
- 4–5 October – Heart of Transdanubia
Taste your way through the regions! Each landscape offers a variety of traditional recipes and modern creations, telling the story of the land and the families behind the products.
