In addition to relaxation, summer vacation also means serious logistical tasks and financial expenses for families. According to the latest survey by REGIO JÁTÉK, the majority of families with young children spend significant amounts of money on organizing their vacation: camping, vacation, beach and seasonal games. The company’s latest sales data confirms that summer is one of the most important periods in the toy market.

Family logistics: who will take care of the child?

According to the results of the research, almost half (49%) of parents with young children face challenges when organizing childcare. Although the respondents believe that the summer period would ideally require 30 days of parental leave, in reality they have an average of 20 days. Based on the responses, one third of employers offer meaningful help to parents, such as flexible work schedules, extra leave or organizing company camps.

One of the most important lessons from the survey is that summer family functioning would be unthinkable without the active involvement of grandparents. 61 percent of respondents rely on grandparents, who spend an average of 3 weeks with their grandchildren. In the remaining weeks, families try to solve childcare problems through camps and working from home.

Sports and craft camps dominate

Camping is one of the most obvious solutions during the summer break: according to the research, almost half of parents enroll their children, the vast majority of which (81%) are daycare camps. Most families pay for one or two camps, typically 5-day camps. The most popular are sports and craft camps, with an average cost of 30-50 thousand forints per camp. At the same time, every fifth parent spends more than 100 thousand forints on their child’s summer camp.

Beach time is a popular but increasingly expensive summer activity

Beach time is still one of the favorite summer activities for young children, despite the fact that most of them expect significant costs. Three quarters of families estimate that an average day at the beach costs at least 15-25 thousand forints, but according to one in five respondents, this amount can even exceed 30 thousand forints, especially if there are several children. “The popularity of water recreation is also reflected in our summer sales: beach toys, such as water guns, rubber mattresses, swimming rings and sandbox sets, account for 8.5 percent of seasonal turnover,” said Dávid Gyaraki, deputy managing director of REGIO JÁTÉK.
