Nutri-Score, or the bittersweet energy label of foods
What are the color scales from “A” to “E” on the packaging of certain foods? How can you summarize the nutrient content of a given food per 100 mg or 100 ml? This is among other things that those who follow us on the latest episode of “Ma Te mit eszel?” can find out. In the latest episode of the science popularization series of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences (MATE) – supported by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office’s Patronage (MEC_24) program – we present the Nutri-Score nutritional value rating system.
Nutri-Score is a labeling system that evaluates the nutritional content of foods, which was created to make it easier for consumers to make decisions taking into account healthy eating aspects. The special marking was introduced by the French government in March 2017 for labeling on foods, and was developed by French nutrition experts.
MATE experts also present what plus and minus points mean in this scientifically based system and how the final evaluation of a product is made up. For a better overview, we present several examples in the program, detailing the factors influencing the scoring of given products. More and more member states in the European Union are using the Nutri-Score marking. In our country, we can only find this colorful, informative labeling system on the products of a few companies or on the shelves of a few supermarket chains. We trust that all this will help our viewers make conscious choices and eat healthy!
The MATE film series helps consumers develop a health-conscious lifestyle and diet with understandable, yet scientifically based information. The series reaches the audience in the form of personal, practical, visually demanding videos. Each episode is also accompanied by a podcast discussion, where the topics of each broadcast are explored in more depth by university experts.
The aim of the series is to start a dialogue. Viewers can ask questions, vote on topics, and comment on what they see on social media platforms. Organizers are also planning university competitions and workshops where interested people can meet researchers and get closer to science through their own experiences. This will make the series not only a source of information, but also a platform for community experience and scientific dialogue.
The professional leader of the project is Dr. Tamás Kocsis, a researcher who won the NKFIH Scientific Patronage competition and an associate professor at the MATE Institute of Food Science and Technology.
