Margarine sales grew, average prices fell
Few food categories were able to grow in both value and volume last year, but margarine was one of them. Retail value sales were up by 4 percent in April 2009- March 2010, while in terms of volume Nielsen registered plus 1 percent. Volume weighted average price was HUF 559/kg this February-March – a year earlier it was HUF 561/kg. Baking margarine increased its market share and was at 34 percent; the tub margarine segment realised 66 percent of retail sales. The non-salted segment kept its 98 percent volume share. Retail channels: stores larger than 400 m² boasted a 68 percent (up 1 percentage point) volume share of sales, while the 401-2,500 m² channel improved sales and its share was 39 percent.
